SCENES FROM RAIL TRANSPORT: The limited express network in Japan was established during the 1960s. Since then the opening of new Shinkansen lines have changed most of the original pattern, although the "Hakucho" between Osaka and Aomori had remained as it was a third of a century ago. The train finally ceased operation with the March 2001 timetable revision. The history of this long-run train is revealed.
TRAIN REPORT: Only few cars of the original Series 0 of Tokaido Shinkansen still remain. The series was introduced with the inauguration of the first Shinkansen back in 1964, and were gradually replaced with new types in the subsequent twenty years. The few remaining cars are now used in local "Kodama"s on Sanyo Shinkansen. A five hour journey between Shin-Osaka and Hakata, twice that of a "Nozomi", is reported. By Norihisa Matsumoto.
REPORT: Chikuho Line, a late arrival to the mass transit scene in Fukuoka metropolitan area, used to be a prospering coal line up till the 1960s. The line is to be electrified together with Sasaguri Line, a shortcut line to Fukuoka, this autumn. The renovation works as well as regional situation are reported. By Fumihiko Suzuki.
SCENES FROM RAIL TRANSPORT: Station master, once an important member of the local community and the representative of the Japanese National Railways as well as being responsible for the operation and management of a railway station, now acts more as a public relations and sales representative. This is a report of a busy day of a station master of a small station of JR Kyushu.
SCENES FROM RAIL TRANSPORT: Decrease in the number of railway users is prominent even in the metropolitan areas such as Tokyo and Osaka. The reason is attributed to the ever decreasing number of children as well as the change in the way of Japanese people's lifestyle, and the phenomenon is more significant in the private railways in the Kyoto- Osaka-Kobe district. Railways concerned are busy proving their services to fit the new trend in the demand.

NEW MOTIVE POWER & ROLLING STOCK: An outline of the Series 885 limited express emu for use on AC sections. The train sets are used on Nippo Line as from the March timetable revision, and comprises a part in JR Kyushu's scheme to build an intercity network covering all the major cities on the island. Being an improved version of the emu developed for use as the limited express "Kamome" of Nagasaki Line, the new series has characteristic interior design.
NEW MOTIVE POWER & ROLLING STOCK: On the Series 683 AC limited express emu developed by JR West in order to upgrade the service on Hokuriku Line. Based on the current Series 681, the new series has been improved in both specification and facilities, and is used for revenue service from the March 2001 timetable revision.
RAILWAY POLICIES: A discussion on the investment and operation of the Treasury Investment and Loan Program which is funded mainly through postal savings. This method of fund raising has been much used in railway construction, but its system and operation may still leave much to be desired. By Nobuyuki Sato.
